LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS.
COWRA POLICE COURT.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 1.
Before AR West, Esq, JP.
EDWARD CANTWELL, charged with vagrancy, pleaded not guilty.
Constable Bennett deposed that on the previous day, while on duty in Kendall-street, he saw the defendant lying on a form in front of the Royal Hotel, with his trousers unbuttoned and his person fully exposed to public view; there were several persons in the street at the time witness’ attention was directed to the condition of the defendant; it was a lady that called witness’ attention to the defendant’s exposed state; the defendant was in a very filthy state when arrested; the offence was committed about noon.
The defendant, who is an old offender, was sentenced to six months’ in Bathurst gaol.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 5.
Before Mr JT West, JP.
Eliza White (aboriginal), charged with vagrancy, pleaded not guilty.
Constable Bennett deposed to having arrested the defendant on the previous evening at about 8.30, on the charge of not having sufficient lawful means of support; he had known the defendant to be wandering about the town for the past month or so, and had frequently seen her in the streets at a late hour in the night; she has been frequently intoxicated, and her conduct upon such occasions is most disorderly; she has no fixed place of abode, neither has she sufficient lawful means of support; witness had been informed that defendant had on the previous night threatened Mrs Mylecharane’s domestic with a knife; the defendant’s conduct is bad; she was under the influence of drink when arrested.
The defendant, who had been several times previously convicted of similar offences, was sentenced to be imprisoned in Bathurst gaol for the term of six months.
