(FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.)
Sydney, Friday.
WILLIAM BOURKE was charged at the Central Police Court to day with having, in company, assaulted Henry Millett. The latter, who was badly cut about the chin, stated that he was in Warby’s Hotel last night, and some of the crowd then began to “get on” to him. A mate of the prisoner’s attacked him, and someone struck him on the chin with a bottle. The manager of the hotel described the disturbance as serious, and stated that at one time there must have been fully 100 people outside the hotel. He saw Bourke reach for a bottle, but he stopped him in time. When Bourke’s record was looked up it was found that he was a dreadfully bad character. He owned up to several convictions, and admitted that he had been summoned to attend the Coroner’s Court in connection with the murder of a sailor in George-street. A fine of £3, with the option of one month’s gaol, was inflicted.
