RAYMOND TERRACE COURT.

    Before Mr JW Fletcher, PM, at the Raymond Terrace Police Court on Wednesday,

    George Dean was charged with committing an offence on the 15th instant at Raymond Terrace. Constable Doran conducted the prosecution, and Mr TA Hill defended accused. After evidence had been taken accused was committed to take his trial at the Newcastle Quarter Sessions on May 21.

QUARTER SESSIONS COURT.

    The Court of Quarter Sessions was opened at the Newcastle Courthouse yesterday morning. His Honor Judge GH Fitzhardinge, presided, and Mr J Armstrong, KC, prosecuted on behalf of the Crown. Mr HH Lang, sheriff, occupied a seat on the bench. Mr JH Hassall acted as clerk of the peace.

    The following gentlemen were attested as Justices of the Peace:– Michael Arbuthnot Fraser, Newcastle; William Gillon, Pelaw-Main; Henry Morgan Williams, Stanford-Merthyr; Jonathon Hittson, Fairfield, and David Peter Plesner, Glen Oak.

    Frederick William Jackson was excused from attendance on the jury, on account of defective hearing.

INCAPABLE OF PLEADING.

    George Dean, 74, old-age pensioner, charged with [indecent] assault [on Walter Holwell] at Raymond Terrace on April 15th, appeared in court in a helpless condition, and was unable to plead or to hear or read the indictment. The Crown Prosecutor stated that the man was a helpless inebriate, and an unfit person to be put upon his trial. The Attorney-General would be communicated with with a view to ascertaining the accused’s mental condition. His Honor directed that the accused be remanded until the next Newcastle Quarter Sessions, bail not being allowed.
