At the Quarter Sessions this morning Richard Ivey, 70 years of age, pleaded not guilty to assaulting a little boy, [Roy Spicer ], of six years with intent to committee [sic] an offence [of buggery]. The jury empanelled were Messrs FD Gamble, E Bullock, Jas Cobley, GE Morgan, WJT Wilson, Joseph Faull, WM Fallon, CW Hamilton, WN Gibbons, WM Stack, TH Taylor. The accused was undefended and did not challenge any jurors. The little boy was called into the witness box, but owing to his tender years his evidence was not taken. Evidence was given by Wm ReesHarry Smith and Sergeant Ferris, the latter producing two statements made and signed by the accused. Ivey gave no evidence on his own behalf, and called no witnesses. The jury, after five minutes’ retirement, returned to court with a verdict of guilty. Ivey was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment, with hard labour.
